Are You a People Person?… Take the Quiz.

Not everyone is a people person, and in marketing, whether its your products, crafts, or services, you need to find out!

SCENARIO: (This is a true story)

You are selling homemade quilt jackets, you spent all year creating these beautiful original jackets, and you are proud of them. You are at a craft show, you have lots of great well made colorful jackets, your display is perfect, everything is ready, when a potential customer comes forward, with a frown upon her face, and starts rifling through your display, looks at your jackets, and then proceeds to scoff at them, picks one out of the pile she has created, finds fault with them, and offers you ten bucks, and tells you she can get jackets like this in Walmart for $9.99. You currently have price tag of 100.00 dollars on the jacket.

do you:

A) keep smiling, take the jacket gently off of her, and tell her how much handiwork has gone into this jacket, therefore you are not reducing the price, and continue to be polite and smile, put the jacket back, and thank her for stopping by and forget about it, … or

B)… do you give her the evil eye, tell her she is nuts, and tell her to get lost with your most “I am insulted” voice… then proceed to warn the other vendors around you in a loud voice about this “cheap @#$% customer”

C)… do you try to smile, but it takes every ounce of your strength not to burst into tears, you are so insulted.. You try to swallow, and look the other way while taking the jacket off of her. You feel like you have just been stabbed by a knife… this customer will haunt you the rest of the day.

If you answered A, then you are able to let insults and criticism roll off your back. You feel proud of your products, and love the challenge of trying to sell your products to customers at these shows or fairs. You know there will always be that small percentage of crusty customers, but they don’t bother you, and you keep your cool and do not take the comments personally.

If you answered B or C, then you should NOT be out there in the front lines selling. You take it all too personally, you are wearing your heart out on your sleeve, and get hurt easily, and will toss and turn at night thinking about that customer.

You may think you are a people person, because you are socially active, but marketing a product and direct sales, are a whole different kettle of fish. It is business, and you have to look at it as business. In which case you would be better off either hiring someone for the front lines, who is a people or customer person, and you stick to making your products, OR

Sell online. This is another great option, if you do not like dealing with customers face to face. You can open a online store, and the customers will only contact you by email, which is much easier to answer. If the email is from crusty, cheap potential customer, that you don’t want, then you can simply press the DELETE button. Selling your products online is a great way to go, since you will be out there for sale 24 hours a day, no show times, no open and close times.. just always ready for sale.

Next time you go to a fair of craft show, or exhibition, watch the sales person, because if they are not good with all kinds of potential customers, even the crusty ones, then they are going to lose sales…. if you think this would be you, then open an online store and get selling!
